How Moxibustion and Bleeding Cupping Relieved My Mother‑in‑Law’s Toothache

How I Restored My Sense of Security Through Meridian Therapy

Lately I’ve realized that modern life often feels insecure—but over the past few days, my own feeling of safety has grown tremendously. It all started with my mother-in-law’s toothache and my own back spasms.

My Mother-in-Law’s Toothache

She’s been back with us for only a week when her tooth pain struck—and as anyone knows, a bad toothache can feel unbearable. She immediately wanted anti-inflammatory injections. After two days of shots and medication with no relief, I told her it was “empty‐heat” and suggested she see a dentist. She insisted on a third injection anyway—and still felt nothing but pain. Finally, she agreed to visit the local dental clinic. The dentist said, “This tooth must come out,” and pulled it. That evening she felt better—but by next morning, the pain had returned. A second dentist insisted another extraction was needed, but she mistrusted the advice and chose to tough it out—only to be in agony again that night.

The next day, a fellow exercise classmate suggested she try niuhuang jie du pian (cow bezoar detox pills). She bought them at once and swore they worked wonders—no more pain by midday. But by midnight I heard her moaning once again. That’s when I said, “Let me do bleeding cupping at Hegu (LI4) for you!” She relented. After a week and over ¥600 spent, her pain persisted—so that evening I applied bleeding cupping on both Hegu and directly above the sore area. Dark blood and bubbles drew out, especially along the Hegu channel. The meridian was clearly blocked. She’s impatient by nature and refused a second session, but if the pain flares again, I’ll repeat the Hegu cupping to clear that blockage.

My Own Back and Leg Pain

Last Sunday, then again Tuesday and Thursday after yoga class, my lower back and legs felt painfully tight—sitting or standing brought sharp discomfort, and I was agitated and pale. My mother-in-law urged me to get injections, but I knew my moxibustion combined with recent stretches had pulled on my meridians. Where qi and blood couldn’t flow—specifically along the bladder channel—I felt severe pulls from my lower back to the back of my thighs.

There’s an old saying: “For back pain, seek Weizhong (BL40).” So I applied bleeding cupping at Weizhong, and the relief was almost instant. Two sessions and I felt restored.

Thursday, I developed itchy, stabbing pains along my gallbladder channel on my left calf. I performed bleeding cupping right on the itchy spots—over time I drew several small blisters. It was painful but left me feeling so much lighter. When the body’s tightness and restlessness build up, bleeding cupping is an outstanding “draining” technique. In the past, cold patterns ruled my complaints, and moxibustion sufficed. Now that my qi and blood have strengthened, I can also control these fire-type irritability symptoms—and I’m proud of that!

A Self-Sufficient Approach to Health

All this cost me nothing out of pocket beyond my existing moxa and cupping sets. If I hadn’t learned meridian self-care, any minor ache would send me rushing to a top hospital—frequent visits, high bills, and often no real cure. Since I began studying meridian therapy, my family’s minor health issues—kids’ colds, fevers, bruises—are easily managed at home. I rarely panic over a sniffle anymore.

I used to chase wealth out of fear of medical bills and major illness—worried I couldn’t afford a hospital stay. Now I realize most issues can be controlled or prevented. By addressing small imbalances early, I’m far less likely to need major treatment. If something serious arises, I know what hospitals do—and I accept that, too. Chronic conditions never truly improved under conventional care anyway. I’ve learned that money alone can’t solve health problems. What truly matters is real skill, sound health principles, and knowledge.

Finding Confidence on the Path of Wellness

The more I learn about self-care, the more confident I become. I’ve seen how vital it is to understand your body: even a twinge can spark terror if you don’t know what’s happening. That anxiety alone is more harmful than a small ache. Every day I meet people who suffer simply because they lack basic health literacy—they assume the worst and spiral into fear. Many have walked a long, winding path before discovering meridian therapy. Those who then dive into self-study with courage and persistence inspire me deeply.

As one of my group moderators says, “Trust your body—it’s wise. Follow its signals.” If you don’t fear mild healing reactions, avoid blindly jabbing anti-inflammatory shots, and resist rushing to “clear heat” at every turn, your health naturally improves. Let your worries fuel learning and exercise, and you’ll feel empowered.

True security isn’t handed to you, nor bought with money. It’s something you build yourself—through dedication, study, and practice.
